February Is Black History MonthIn past years, Hanover Park celebrated Black History Month with an annual Sister Cities Comittee Black History event. Unfortunately due to the pandemic, the event was canceled this year. We look forward to celebrating the accomplishments of Black Americans next year.
To commemorate and celebrate the contributions to our nation made by people of African descent, American historian Carter G. Woodson established Black History Week (then called “Negro History Week”) nearly a century ago. The event was first celebrated during the second week of February 1926, selected because it coincides with the birthdays of both Abraham Lincoln (February 12) and abolitionist/writer Frederick Douglass (February 14). That week would continue to be set aside for the event until 1976 when, as part of the nation’s bicentennial, it was expanded to a month. Since then, U.S. presidents have proclaimed February as National African American History Month.

Extreme Cold PreparednessThe Hanover Park Fire Department encourages residents to be prepared for the cold weather to keep you and your families safe.
FEMA offers the following “Get Ready for Winter Weather tips.” Taking preparedness actions, such as winterizing your car and keeping an emergency supply kit in it, can make a big difference in protecting you and your family. Other actions you can take to effectively prepare for winter conditions include:
- Preparing your home to keep out the cold with insulation. Learn how to keep pipes from freezing. Install and test smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors with battery backups.
- Know your winter weather terms and paying attention to weather reports and warnings of freezing weather and winter storms. Sign up for your community’s warning system.
- Gather supplies in case you need to stay home for several days without power. Keep in mind each person’s specific needs, including medication. Remember the needs of your pets.
- Create an emergency supply kit for your car. Include jumper cables, sand, a flashlight, warm clothes, blankets, bottled water and non-perishable snacks. Keep a full tank of gas and, if possible, have a professional check your battery, anti-freeze and cooling system.
If you should experience a power outage, please contact ComEd at (800) 334-7661 or report an outage online. If you are experiencing an emergency, please dial 911.

Extreme Cold and Water Main Breaks
The Village of Hanover Park Public Works Department is responsible for the maintenance and repair of all the underground water mains. Water main breaks are possible as the ground freezes and thaws in response to extreme temperatures. While water mains generally do not freeze, when temperatures are below freezing, soil may contract and shift when it freezes, causing pipes to move and increasing the likelihood of a water main break and subsequent repair. If you see water in the roadway or in place that it should not be, Contact Public Works at 630.823.5700 or after hours, please contact the Police Department at 630-823-5500 to report a possible water main break.
Beware of Frozen Pipes in Your Home Please look at your internal home piping as to whether or not it might freeze. Water that is not moving in the pipe can freeze if it is against an external wall. Consider opening cabinet doors or leaving a trickle of water running. If a pipe does freeze, consider warming it with hot towels, hair dryer, or a portable space heater. Do not leave space heaters unattended. Don’t use a torch or open flame. You should know how to turn off the water in your home before a pipe bursts. If you do have a pipe burst, the sooner you can turn off the water, the less damage you will have in your home.
Extreme Cold Road Conditions With the extreme cold temperatures expected over the next few days, please drive very safely. Roadways may be unexpectedly icy at times as temperatures are too low for salt to work. Please slow down and give yourself extra time to get where you’re going.
