Winter Travel Safety TipsRemember these winter travel tips to keep yourself safe during the winter months.
- Drastically reduce speeds and take it slow, especially when approaching intersections, ramps, bridges and shaded areas that are prone to icing.
- Make sure your gas tank is full.
- Keep a cell phone, warm clothes, blankets, food, water, a first-aid kit, washer fluid and an ice scraper in your vehicle.
- Check the forecast and make sure someone is aware of your route and schedule.
- Reminder: Using handheld phones while driving is illegal in Illinois, unless it is an emergency.
- If you are involved in a crash or break down, remain inside your vehicle, which is your safest form of shelter. Exiting your vehicle into live traffic can have fatal consequences.
- Always wear a seat belt, whether you’re sitting in the front seat or back seat. It’s the law.
- Visit www.gettingaroundillinois.com for regular updates on road conditions statewide. You also can follow IDOT on Facebook and Twitter.

Frozen Pipes PreventionWinters can get really darn cold! Residents should be aware of the potential for their water pipes to freeze and the extensive damage that can result. Many costly repairs can be avoided by practicing a few activities that will safeguard your home. - If you’re going to be out of town over the winter, you should not leave your thermostat lower than 55-60 degrees. Any temperature lower than this can freeze the plumbing near your outside walls. Have someone check on your home during the severe cold to make sure everything is ok.
- Open cabinets and closets that contain water lines to allow warm air to circulate around the plumbing.
- Check for drafts and poorly heated areas with plumbing nearby. Pipes most susceptible to freezing are typically those near outer walls, in crawl spaces, attics and basements.
- Do not leave garage doors open.
- Make sure that outside spigots are turned off and garden hoses are disconnected. If you’re still worried, you can also buy insulated caps that fit over the spigots to keep them warm.
- Allow cold water to drip through faucets. Running or dripping water can prevent water lines from freezing.
- Homeowners can wrap any exposed pipes in their home with foam pipe insulation or heat tape that has the UL seal of approval.
Please make sure that your inside water shut-off valve works and that you know where this important valve is located. Keep your contact information updated with the Village’s water billing department in order to be reached in the event of an emergency. The water billing phone number is (630) 823-5799. If you suspect that your pipes have frozen call Public Works at (630) 823-5700 Monday through Friday between 8:00 am and 3:30 pm or contact a local licensed plumber. Improper thawing could cause pipes to burst and add to the problem. Following these tips could help ensure a good winter season for you and your home.
