Environmental Committee

The Environmental Committee works to provide residents of the Village with information and opportunities relating to environmentally-friendly practices. We hold a number of annual events, including the following:

               6/25/17 - Community Apairy Open House - 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Come and visit our beehives, learn about honey bees, and see how you can get started keeping honey bees in Hanover Park.

               7/15/17 -  Drain Stenciling - 9:00 am - 12:00 pm
Volunteers and members of the Environmental Committee stencil Village storm sewer inlets in yellow paint with the words,
"Dump No Waste, Drains to River."  Rain date:  July 22, 2017.

                9/23/17 - Recycling Event - 9:00 am - 1:00 pm
See our flyer here for the list of acceptable and unacceptable items.

              10/14/17 - River Sweep - 9:00 am - 12:00 pm
A countrywide clean-up which encourages citizens to improve local waterways by removing debris and litter from the West
Branch of the DuPage River.  Rain date:  October 21, 2017.

              11/04/17 - Pumpkin Recycling - 9:00 am - 12:00 pm
All pumpkins are recycled through composting.  Composting pumpkins keeps waste out of our landfills, reduces greenhouse gas
emissions, and creates a natural fertilizer for our soils.

Recycling
You may recycle household batteries, and compact fluorescent light bulbs year-round at Public Works on weekdays from 8:00 am to 3:30 pm. Our Recycling Event will be held at the Hanover Park Metra Station.

Honey Bees
An apiary is a location for raising honey bees.  The Village opened the nation's first Community Apiary in 2011 to help combat the very real threats facing these vital insects.  To apply to keep bees in our apiary, download an application here.

Awards
Efforts by the Environmental Committee and our volunteers have been recognized by two Governor's Hometown Awards (for the Community Apiary and the Recycling Event).  You may have seen our award signs as you entered town.

Environmental Compact
The Metropolitan Mayors Caucus created the Greenest Region Compact 2 to address environmental sustainability issues of global importance at the local level.  It is important for Mayors and local governments throughout the United States to take leadership roles to advance sustainability both in their own communities and in concert with regional, national and global initiatives.  Our Village Board passed a Resolution endorsing the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus' Greenest Region Compact 2 on April 21, 2016.  Please see the attached compact supporting the consensus goals of GRC2 by clicking here.
