The goal of the Sister Cities Committee is to foster knowledge and understanding between the people of the Village and the people of other nations’ cities. In 1956, President Dwight D. Eisenhower launched the “People-to-People Initiative.” Recognizing the importance of involving all citizens in world diplomacy, he called upon the nations’ cities as the centers of opportunity, expression and economic growth, to unite with communities around the world in building a solid structure of world peace.
Sister Cities means a close, mutually beneficial relationship marked by shared concern and effective cooperation. This relationship must have the endorsement of the municipal government and the support of community volunteers. Launched by the signing of a formal agreement, the program brings together “citizen diplomats” to share ideas, activities and solutions on a range of topics, including the environment, education, culture, medicine, technology and commerce.
Hanover Park has Sister City relationships with Cape Coast, Ghana in West Africa and Valparaiso, Zacatecas, in central Mexico. Sister Cities Committee membership is free and the meetings are open to the public.
