Are you interested in becoming a Storm Spotter for the National Weather Service? The NWS- Chicago office hosts annual Spotter Training courses in preparation for Severe Weather season. There are both in-person and virtual courses available. You will learn how to submit photos of weather-related damage, hail, and funnel clouds that will assist the NWS office with severe weather warning and damage assessments.

Storm Spotters are essential for the National Weather Service to gain ground truth from severe weather. Often, radar will indicate severe weather like high winds, hail and possible rotation, but having those suspected indicators confirmed by a Storm Spotter is priceless!

When there is an emergency, make sure you and your family have a plan! It’s important to talk to your family about a plan of where to meet, what to bring, and who to contact.

Recognize that in extreme situations, emergency resources may be limited. Be prepared to care for yourself and your family for at least three days. Here is a useful guide to what to pack in an Emergency Supply Kit.

Power Outage Tips!

Is your family prepared for a power outage? Here are some tips to keep your family safe and comfortable during and after a storm.

  • Keep freezers and refrigerators closed.
  • Use a generator, but ONLY outdoors and away from windows.
  • Do not use a stove or oven to heat your home.
  • Disconnect appliances and electronics to avoid damage from electrical surges.
  • Have a plan for keeping medications cool and to power any medical devices.
